In the middle of the scroll was a detailed and instantly recognizable drawing of Jack.

All the blood drained out of Rilla’s face.

“What is your name, young lady?” asked the Mayor.

“Gabrielle.” Rilla stumbled to her knees, allowing Jack to help her stand. “Shouldn’t you be looking for poor Catherine and the brute she married?”

The man looked around then lowered his voice. “It’s obvious from your conduct that you have not been abducted, otherwise I would take you and your friend into custody. Get out of town before one of my constables recognize you.”

Rilla nodded, and she and Jack grabbed their bags from under their seats and sped through the village. Soon, the pair found themselves in another forest, and they slowed enough to catch their breath in the safety of the trees.

Once they could breathe without panting, Jack turned to Rilla with an enormous grin. “You were amazing. I’ve never met or imagined ever meeting a woman like you.”

Rilla felt a blush bloom from her cheeks to her chest. She didn’t know what to say so she shook her head and averted her gaze. Thoughts of Catherine came to mind, and her eyes filled with tears.

“I mean it.” He stopped walking and wiped her cheeks.

She turned to him, cocking her head to the side. “Really?”

“You set me free, and your bravery has awoken something I thought I’d lost forever.”

She had no words in reply, but her heart thumped hard in her chest.

Jack leaned forward and pressed his lips to hers in a sweet and chaste kiss.

Rilla trembled, but it felt right.

His face lit up like the sun, and he leaned in for another kiss, but frantic tweeting broke their romantic moment.

Rilla turned and faced a large bluebird. It puffed out its red breast and smacked Rilla over the head with its wing. Squealing, she ducked, trying to bat it away. The bird swooped down on Jack, its talons raking over his face. Jack yelped and turned, but the bird flew after him, pecking every bit of flesh it could reach.

“Rilla, it’s Bluebeard’s bird,” Jack yelled. “Run, before it calls the others!”
